Taylor Alexis: Squatting Deep and Asking Questions

Taylor packs more power than she gives herself credit for. Not only does she squat more then most bros quarter squat, but she looks amazing while doing it. A former college track star, turned bikini competitor, is now looking to take her training to a high level. She has a one track mind when it come to competing, no matter the area of fitness. This former  400-meter hurdler (anyone who has seen or done this knows the pain) is going to take the 2016 season in full strides.

How old are you, where are you from, and do you squat ass to grass?
I hail from Jacksonville Florida. ✌ I am 23 years young and I most definitely squat ass to grass.

What areas of weight training do you train? And what is your best squat?
I’m currently prepping for my first bikini competition. The plan is to step out on stage sometime in the spring. My squat max right now is 190 and my deadlift max is 260.

Where do you train? Do you have a lifting team or partner?
The gym I call home is Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym. I’m actually not affiliated with a team and I prefer to lift by myself. Maybe that’s because I have yet to find that one person I don’t mind lifting with.

How did you into bodybuilding?
Well, I have been an athlete all my life. I ran track and played soccer in high school as well as college. So after I had my son and graduated college, I decided to get myself involved in a different type of sport, one that mentally and physically challenges me as well as keeps me in shape and my need for competition and goal achievement under control haha.

What does a normal leg day workout look like for you?
I ran track for The Citadel (it’s what paid for my college, haha). I was a short sprinter who the coaches converted into a 400m hurdler. Well, a hurdler in general. My typical leg day consists of a warm up to get loose followed by leg presses, quad extension, hamstring curls, squats, deadlifts, and ends with adductor and abductors for the butt and 15 minutes on the stair master. It takes me about 2 hrs to complete

So what’s next for you? Any goals you have to hit?
Well, my current goal is to step on stage in a very sparkly bikini. I am the type of person that has to hit every goal I set for myself whether it is physical, mental, personal, or public.

When you lift heavy, when was the first time you out lifted a guy? And what do your non-lifter friends think about what you do?
Haha umm, I don’t remember a specific time, but I do get a lot of stares when it’s max day since I am so small. I’m only 5’2″ and weigh 110. So I’m squatting and deadlifting close to or over double my weight. It’s amusing to see people stare out of the corner of their eyes or through the mirrors. Like I don’t see you. Haha
My non-lifter friends don’t understand the mechanics of the diet that goes along with this type of lifestyle. Like I tell them I don’t think of my diet as actual dieting. To me, it’s more of a lifestyle and it’s what I’m used to. If you prepare your meals right there’s no reason to why they can’t be tasty.

What are some of your bodybuilding goals (short and long term)?
Right now my short term is to rock that stage from my first to my last. And long term is to step on that stage for the Olympia with my role models.

What do you tell women who think lifting heavy makes you look “manly”?
Hahaha!! I just laugh and then ask them if I look manly. Most of the time they just blush and sheepishly look down and say no. That’s when I say there’s no need to be scared or intimidated by weights and give them a huge smile.

Anything you would like to tell younger lifters? And/or anything else you would like to add?
For them to just remember that everyone starts somewhere so never be embarrassed with the weights your start out lifting with. It’ll take time, but the perseverance they put into training will be worth it and to remember that this change is a slow progress and not an overnight thing.
